My 67 Mustang has a 289 4 barrel. It's Cam is lift 450 in & 475 ex. What is best timing, points and plug gap?
Full Camshaft specs are Valve timing IN 25/65 EX 74/26. Duration IN 204 EX 280. It has a Rochester 4 barrel but no tube from the Exhaust manifold to Carb, should there be one? There is one that runs from the Rocker cover into the Air Filter? Current timing is set at 8 deg but I'm told you can go out to 12 deg advance? I'm looking for best setting for this set up.

Are you sure you have a Rochester? They were on some later model Fords but not sure about 67'. You can tell as it says 'Rochester QuadraJet' on the side. If it has one then it's likely an odd case. They are a good carb, but not so easy to tune as a Holley. I would say for plugs, timing and all that, start with stock and start moving forward from that, bumping the time is fine to some extent, but look at the total advanced as well for your engine. I think it's mentioned elsewhere on the motorator.

Hi and thanks for the reply. Not sure a Rochester. It does have a Ford tag on it but no other writing? Do you have the standard points/plug gaps? The car was restored here in New Zealand and not sure on some of the pats used.

Check out this site, should have the details for setting up points and plugs. They have 3 289's listed, it's likely the middle one. The 271hp is the HP Solid lifer motor, the 225 is the 4v, and 200 is the 2V. You might have a quadrajet, not sure if export cars had different setups. But you can tell as the primary barrels are small and the secondary are huge. Do a search for Quadrajet for a picture. If you ignition is better then stock open up the points to that of the 271hp engine.

Totally forgot the link -

http://www.1967-mustang.com/general-specifications.htm

You can also try moving the timing up to the 271hp spec, see if it knocks, if so, go back to stock. Also you may have to turn the idle down a bit if you move the timing. I would keep things in the relm of the 271hp engine as it's pretty mild but good starting point.

Hi and any thanks for all your help. Much appreciated. The car was imported here in 2000 and rebuild. It has, according to the build sheet a 289-2V motor. I'll check the carb further and let you know.
