What are the disadvantages of using wheel spacers?

Are there safety concerns, handling/performance issues? I've never used them but am considering them to widen the stance of my vehicle.

Only under the most extreme track or off-road conditions could wheels spacers become a problem. For the most part, wheels spacers should be fine for your car or truck, provided they are quality, hub-centric pieces. If you're going to use just a simple "slip-on" spacer, I would recommend not going more than 1/4". Anything greater than 1/4" should really be a bolt-on spacer/adapter. Whatever you decide to do, just be sure to double check all your clearances. Make sure the tires will clear the fenders and suspension parts while the wheels are turned and with the suspension under a load.
