Despite a shift in ownership, Dodge is in for the long haul in the horsepower war with Chevy. The new 2008 Viper SRT 10 steps up with 600 hp. This is a significant increase over the current Corvette Z06's 505 hp. Expect Chevy to up the ante with its Blue Devil Z06 Corvette, rumored to have anywhere from 600 hp to just over 700 hp, but Dodge will be first to market. Loyal MOPAR enthusiasts can expect the aftermarket to quickly introduce performance upgrades for the 2008 Viper such as performance exhaust systems, cold aid intakes, coil-over suspensions and possibly supercharger or turbo kits. At the 2007 New York Auto Show, Dodge introduced the Viper SRT 10 Concept Coupe featuring parts from MOPAR Performance and a number of aftermarket manufacturers. Some of the featured upgrades include:
• Tubular exhaust header package
• High-flowing cat-back exhaust system
• Low-restriction, functional cold-air intake system
• Fully adjustable coil-over suspension kit
• Lightweight wheels
• Titanium valves and connecting rods
• Cast-Litex pistons and lightened crankshaft
• High-flow intake manifold
• Carbon fiber coil covers and crinkle black valve covers
• Adapted Dodge Viper Competition Coupe rear wing and front splitter
• Michelin racing slicks, 18-inch in front and 19-inch in the rear
• Six-point racing restraints
The Viper Concept Coupe came in at 675 hp @ 6000 rpm and 650 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm.
The 2008 Viper is coming in as a mid-year entry and should hit showrooms by summer 2007. Look for performance parts to be introduced at the SEMA show this November.
