The Grand National Roadster Show is the longest running indoor car show and home to the coveted “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award, known within the industry as the AMBR. The world’s finest hot rod builders compete for the chance to get their name listed on the 9 ½ foot AMBR trophy. Previous winners include iconic builders such as Steve Moal, Roy Brizio, Boyd Coddington and Chip Foose.
After two years of meticulous work, the 2010 AMBR award goes to “Possessed,” a beautiful 1933 roadster built by Scott’s Hot Rods ‘N Customs and owned by Mike and Dianna Dingman. This isn’t the first win for Scott’s Hot Rods ‘N Customs as they built the
2008 AMBR winner called “Undisputed” for owner Rudy Necoechea. The competition was fierce this year with a ’32 roadster built by Chip Foose for Jerry and Maureen Magnuson, and a gorgeous 1936 Auburn Boattail built by Rick Dore for Metallica’s James Hetfield.
The design idea fueling “Possessed” was to blend the car Ford built in 1933 with the designs employed by European coachbuilders of the same era. Justin Padfield (owner of Scott’s Hot Rods ‘N Customs) and his team hand-formed every body panel on the car. Their attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed. The body was stretched a total of 13 inches, with 10 inches in front and 2 inches in the doors. Then the rear was shortened and ports were added while custom-fitted leather luggage and a picnic basket sit snuggly in the trunk.
The ’33 roadster is powered by a modified, fuel-injected 392 cubic-inch engine that Mike Dingman was able to source through his longtime relationship with Ford. BASF supplied four coats of the burnt umber paint with five coats of clear and applied by Alan Palmer at Palmer’s Custom Paint and Body in Camarillo, CA. While Mike Dingman called in every favor he could to help build this car, it is estimated to have cost nearly $500,000.
Congratulations to Mike and Dianna Dingman,
Scott’s Hot Rods ‘N Customs and everyone else involved in creating this year’s most beautiful roadster.
