“Blowfish” is a 1969 Plymouth Baracuda built by Rad Rides by Troy for Camel Toe Racing owner/driver George Poteet. Sporting its new 358 cubic inch R5 Sprint Cup engine built by JESEL, the "Blowfish" will be going for a record in the Blown Fuel Comp. Coupe Class C - the standing record in this class is 262 mph. The "Blowfish" will be racing to set a new record of 300 mph on the 5-mile course.
The Discovery Channel has been on the salt flat shooting footage for a 1-hour program on Bonneville, which will air later this year.
After a day of setting up the
Rad Rides / Camel Toe camp, “Blowfish” was ready to make its first run on Monday, August 18th, 2008. The car went 150 mph in first gear! There was a slight issue with the new 5-speed air shifter. The adjustment was made back at the Camel Toe Camp and the car was ready to run again.
"Blowfish" was back in line Tuesday morning to make its second run. During this run the car reached 250 mph at the 2 1/4 mile marker. George had to shut the car down due to the smoke coming into the cockpit, which was caused from the header wrap. The car again headed back to Camp Camel Toe where a few adjustments have been made.
Late Wednesday afternoon, "Blowfish" made another run on the 5-mile course and ran a record 284 MPH! George decided not to back it up until the team downloaded the race data and reviewed the adjustments that were made. The standing record in the class is 262 MPH, which "Blowfish" beat by 22 mph, with this run.
At the 2-mile marker "Blowfish" was at a speed of 200 mph, but George hit a bad spot on the track and went airborne for about 200 feet. There was a minimal amount of damage to the front spoiler.
Unfortunately, a broken driveshaft yoke did not allow George to back up his 284 MPH run. “Blowfish” and the
Camel Toe Racing team will be back to Bonneville on October 8th for the World Finals. We wish them luck on their way to 300 MPH!
