GM's Limited Edition 427 Crate Engine.

I just got back from the amazing 2007 SEMA show in Las Vegas. There were tons of great new products and beautiful vehicles on display from more than 2,100 vendors. I'll bring you the best of the show over the next few months and what better way to get things started then with the new 427 crate engine from GM.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Chevrolet big block, GM Performance Parts has brought back a modern version of the ZL1 for your chance to relive muscle car history. The Anniversary Edition 427 starts with a retooled version of the ZL1 aluminum block using the exact same tooling that helped create this legend in 1969. The advantage of the aluminum block is that it offers the completed engine the weight of a small block with a whole lot more power.

With a full list of features, this modern ZL1 is one of the most exclusive big block crate engines ever offered by GM Performance Parts. Fittingly, only 427 will ever be produced, and then the ZL1 tooling will be retired forever. The 427 lucky owners of this commemorative monster can expect an estimated 480 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque.

The 427 copies of the Anniversary 427 go on sale in the first quarter of 2008 through GM dealers and authorized GM Performance Parts retailers. Each copy also comes with a complementing Anniversary Owners Kit that includes a certificate of authenticity, an engine plate with specifications, and other items.

You know The Ripper has to comment on this.

Being an old time GM fan and The Rippers favorite motor is in fact the Big Block Chevy (MK4). I have had them in various cars, and have an authentic Can-Am ZL-1 block in a... 427 1966 Cobra replica, what else would you put in it?

As in all silver lined clouds some gray shines, they made a 'streetable' ZL-1, so lets call this the ZL-0.75 as the original engine specs were SQUARE PORT HEADS and over 12:1 compression, and the necessary MECHANICAL Cam. Which all seem ok for a street motor to me...

Also this is the second coming of the crate motor ZL1, it has been in stock a few years back (not many), it was also a limited production run.

Wow, still 480hp, that is more then the original ZL-1 back in the day....or wait maybe the 430hp was under rated ;-)

Again, I wonder if they will take a personal check, or if GM would be interested in letting me demo one, I'm sure I can find something to shake it out in.
