The Boss is Back!

Boss_logo.jpg

If you haven't heard already, Ford is releasing a new performance aftermarket engine block called the BOSS 302. With input from Ford's NASCAR engineers and lessons learned from Ford's success in the ASA racing series, the Ford Racing BOSS 302 features the latest in race block technology. The BOSS 302 is priced ($1,759 retail) to fill the void between the inexpensive 2-bolt, 302 production blocks and the expensive aftermarket race blocks from Dart and World Products.

The BOSS 302 has a maximum bore size of 4.125" allowing up to 363 CID capacity and weighs in at 165lbs "" that's only 32 lbs. more than a production 2-bolt block and 15-30+ lbs. lighter than many popular race, 4-bolt blocks. Additional features include:

• Screw-in O-ring sealed straight thread freeze plugs

• 4-bolt nodular iron machined splayed main caps (2, 3, 4)

• ½" head bolts

• Siamese bore

• Enhanced lifter bore diameter

• Larger oil and cooling passages

• Lifter galley front oil crossover

How is this different then the current SVO 4 bolt blocks? I'm sure I could do an apples to apples check, but way to lazy. Nice marketing, and for grins toss in a ThumpR cam!

Ripper. There are a few differences between the BOSS 302 block and the R302 4-bolt block we're used to.

The BOSS block has screw-in freeze plugs rather than press in caps for added strength.

The R302 and BOSS both have a Siamese bore, however the BOSS has engineered cross drilling for cooling, whereas the R302 does not.

The R302 uses pipe threaded oil galley plugs and the BOSS has screw-In O-ring sealed straight threads.

The BOSS block is cast in-house at Ford's diesel engine building facility rather than outsourced like the R302 blocks. This means the BOSS block is now diesel grade, heat-treated cast iron (41,000psi tensile strength). The BOSS block is stronger and weighs 16lbs. less then the R302.

In addition to these improvements, the BOSS block ($1,759) is priced less than the R302 ($1,999) since Ford is no longer outsourcing production.

Of course, this is only for us guys who can’t afford 4-bolt, aluminum blocks ;-)

See you on the track soon!

Motorator -

Cool info, and thanks for keeping me lazy (Honest too). Will drive the competition a little mad as I have seen some specials on Dart Iron blocks as well as World Products. Can't have enough competition to make it a buyers market! Even seeing the price of the R302 blocks in the $1800 range. Must be a clearance sale :)

Yes, catch you soon!

The block comes unmachined, but it is designed to clear a stroker kit and can be bored up to 4.125" to a maximum displacement of 363 cubic inches. And yes, the Boss block will accept a roller cam.
